Special Economic Zone (ETI)

Last updated 2026-06-27

A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a designated area where the Employment Tax Incentive applies on relaxed terms, notably without the usual age limits.

A Special Economic Zone, or SEZ, is a government-designated area intended to attract investment and create jobs. For payroll, employment in an approved SEZ changes how the Employment Tax Incentive can be claimed.

What it means

The Employment Tax Incentive normally applies only to younger employees within an age band. An employer operating in an approved SEZ can claim ETI for qualifying employees regardless of age, which is a significant relaxation. The SEZ status is recorded against the employee so the ETI calculation applies the right rules.

Where it fits in

The SEZ designation feeds the ETI calculation alongside the wage floor and the industry classification. Where an employee qualifies under an SEZ, the age restriction is lifted but the wage and other ETI conditions still apply.

Key rules

  • A designated zone where ETI applies on relaxed terms.
  • Removes the usual ETI age limits for qualifying employees.
  • Other ETI conditions, including the wage floor, still apply.
  • The SEZ status is recorded against the employee for the ETI claim.
